Spektralfarben im Innenhof

Das Berliner Krankenhaus erscheint heute als ein Klinikkomplex mit zahlreichen An- und Umbauten, die die Funktions- und Leistungskapazität im Laufe der 100-jährigen Geschichte sicherstellten. Mittels Wandmalerei wurde ein zentraler Lichthof mit Anbindung an den Haupteingang des Klinikums neu in Szene gesetzt und atmosphärisch aufgewertet. Besondere Herausforderung dabei waren der hohe Anteil an Fenstern in der Fassade sowie die gewachsene Stilvielfalt in unmittelbarer Umgebung.

Today, the Berlin hospital appears as a complex of buildings with numerous extensions and alterations that have ensured its functional and operational capacity over the course of its 100-year history. A central atrium connected to the hospital’s main entrance has been reimagined and given a new atmosphere through the use of wall murals. Particular challenges in this project were the high proportion of windows in the façade and the diverse range of architectural styles in the immediate vicinity.

Gegründet von den Schwestern von der heiligen Elisabeth, nahm das St. Joseph Krankenhaus 1928 den Betrieb in Berlin auf. Ins Leben gerufen wurde die Ordensgemeinschaft 1842 von vier jungen Frauen in Neiße: Nach dem Vorbild der heiligen Elisabeth von Thüringen pflegten sie arme und mittellose Kranke – ohne Unterschied des Standes oder der Religion.

Nach den vielfältigen Kooperationen von Ulrich Reimkasten im Schwesterhaus St. Elisabeth und St. Barbara Krankenhaus in Halle/ Saale wurde nun die erfolgreiche Arbeit in Berlin im Rahmen der neugegründeten Künstlergruppe SEPIA erfolgreich fortgesetzt.

Der Begriff Lichthof bezeichnete für uns einerseits einen architektonischen Funktionsraum, war aber gleichzeitig auch der thematische Ansatz für die Wandmalerei. Diese sollte vor allem die ästhetische Qualität des Ortes steigern und verwandelnd in das Foyer und angrenzende Räume hineinwirken. Farbe ist Licht, Licht ist Farbe - der Urstoff der Malerei. Der Charakter der Farben erinnert an einen Regenbogen. Die malerische Struktur verweist auf die Haut einer Schlange als Symbol der Medizin.

Founded by the Sisters of St Elizabeth, St Joseph’s Hospital began operating in Berlin in 1928. The religious order was established in 1842 by four young women in Neisse: following the example of St Elizabeth of Thuringia, they cared for the poor and destitute sick – regardless of social status or religion.

Following Ulrich Reimkasten’s diverse collaborations at the Sisters’ House of St. Elizabeth and St. Barbara Hospital in Halle/Saale, this successful work was now continued in Berlin within the framework of the newly founded artists’ group SEPIA.

For us, the term ‘light court’ referred on the one hand to a functional architectural space, but at the same time served as the thematic starting point for the mural. Above all, this was intended to enhance the aesthetic quality of the space and have a transformative effect on the foyer and adjoining rooms. Colour is light, light is colour – the primal substance of painting. The character of the colours is reminiscent of a rainbow. The painterly texture evokes the skin of a snake as a symbol of medicine.
