During the design process, we became increasingly convinced that stone would be the ideal material for realising this artistic vision in every sense of the word. Stone is a primal material steeped in culture, synonymous with durability and collective memory since the dawn of humanity. With its sheer infinite variety of colours and textures, stone also represents the richness of our planet. The inherent appeal of this natural material, with its subtle tones, is clearly expected to have a profound effect on visitors and passers-by.
Pedestrians, scooter riders and café guests enter the scene as they cross the square and experience the colour and material directly. We have all experienced this perceptual psychological effect of standing and walking on an unusual, extraordinary surface. The square takes on a character with unmistakable charm. And it becomes spatially centred – an essential conceptual component of the design. A place and a landmark.
